The Kitchen Tales - Short Story Collection

A$29.00

“When Death knocked on the door of Nettie Chambers, she flapped her hands hurriedly as if she were shooing a fly or shaking out the tablecloth, and he quietly went away…”

A collection of short stories about the fictional lives of a passing generation of Australian women. The ageing characters offer their cautionary tales around themes of domesticity and individual fulfillment. Funny, sweet, and sad, creeping into myth as a language of the human condition, the stories face honestly the lingering question around a woman’s destiny. Doubling as a unique small-run art book, The Kitchen Tales is designed by Sally as an early-mid 20th century chapbook with dust cover, and includes a tribute to early 20th century abstract painter and colorist, Sonia Delaunay. Printed on sustainable papers and produced in Melbourne on Kulin Country.

Sally’s writing has been awarded by the National Trust of Victoria, by Short Story Prizes of local and regional writing festivals and by the Port Phillip Citizens for Reconciliation. It has also appeared twice in Australian Womankind magazine. The Colours of Mrs A. Daloney, one of the stories in this collection, was awarded the National Alan Marshall Short Story Award Shortlist in 2010. The Kitchen Tales featured in the 2022-2024 NGV Melbourne Art Book Fairs.
